Letting GoJenny was a 5 year old girl. One day, she and her mum went to buy groceries, and while checking out, she saw a pretty plastic pearl necklace priced at $2.50. She loved it at first sight, and asked her mum if she could buy it. Her mum told her "Its a pretty necklace, but it costs alot of money. However, i'll buy it for you. but when we get home, i'll prepare a list of chores you can do for me to pay for this necklace."
Jenny worked hard on her chores, and on her birthday, her Grandma gave her a dollar bill too. Soon, she paid off the necklace already. She wore them everywhere - to kindergarten, to bed, and when she went out with her mum to run errands. The only time she didn't wear the necklace was when she was bathing, as her mum told her that it will turn her neck green.
Jenny had a very loving father. When Jenny went to bed, he would get up from his favourite chair, and read to her one of her favourite stories. One day, after reading the story to her, he had a talk with her.
"Jenny, do you love me?"
"Oh yes Daddy. You know i love you!" she replied.
"Well then, give me your pearls." he said.
"Oh Daddy! Not my pearls! But you can have Rosie, my favourite doll! You gave her to me last year for my birthday, and you can have her party tea outfit too! Ok?" said Jenny.
"Oh no. Its ok darling. good night my child" and he gave her a kiss on her cheek.
1 week later, after reading Jenny her story, Daddy asked her the same question again. However, Jenny replied.
"Oh Daddy! Not my pearls! but you can have Ribbons! My toy horse. her hair is so soft, and you can braid it and play with it and everything. She's my favourite."
"Oh its ok honey. sweet dreams" and he gave her a kiss on her cheeks once more.
Several days later, when Daddy came to read Jenny a story, Jenny was sitting on her bed, and her lips were trembling.
"Here Daddy." she said, and held out her hand. She opened it, and her beloved pearl necklace was inside. She let it slip into her father's hands. With one hand, Daddy held the plastic pearls, and with the other, he took out of his pocket a blue velvet box. Inside it were genuine pearls.
He had them all along, but he was waiting for Jenny to give up the cheap stuff so that he could give her the real thing. (:
Are we holding on to things in our lives which we should have let go off long ago? Sometimes it is so difficult to see what's in the other hands, and it might just be something that is better for us.
P.S - should i let go of this liking that i have developed for you? im not sure. but i know its something that i cannot let go of easily.
